Inlays / Onlays

Inlays and onlays are the ideal solution for teeth that have been damaged as a result of tooth decay, cracks or old restorations that are falling apart.

They can be made from composite resin, gold or even porcelain, and are used to seal the damaged part of the tooth. Similar to fillings, inlays are used for minor bonds inside the cusp tips of teeth. Onlays on the other hand generally cover a greater area of the tooth, extending out over the tooth cusps for larger restorations.

While gold used to be the global standard for inlay and onlay restorations, porcelain is now a lot more common. Amongst other advantages, porcelain matches the natural color of teeth, and is a lot stronger and more resilient.

While traditional fillings reduce the strength of natural teeth by as much as 50%, porcelain inlays and onlays have proven to increase tooth strength by up to 75%. This makes it the obvious choice for anyone suffering with tooth decay or a cracked tooth. Inlays and onlays have also been known to last as long as 10 to 30 years, forming a permanent bond to the tooth.
