WHAT HAPPENS IN A REGULAR EXAMINATION?

Exams allow dentists to identify problems in their early stages by checking the gums and teeth for decay, diseases and any other problems. We’ll also often use X-rays and digital imaging technology to check for issues beneath the surface of your teeth and gums, making sure everything’s looking good.

WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF PROFESSIONAL CLEANING?

While regular brushing and flossing is vital, it’s not always enough to prevent problems in the gums and teeth. Dental hygienists begin the cleaning by focusing on the surface of your teeth, looking for cavities and checking the state of your fillings. They will then check your gums for periodontal diseases and bone related problems. From there they’ll move on to the next level of cleaning; flossing the teeth and using a variety of polishing tools and compounds to remove any deeper layers of tartar that have built up on the teeth. Once this is all done, they’ll apply a layer of fluoride to help strengthen the teeth against decay.

Cleaning session are painless and for the people who do experience minor discomfort, there are a number of sedative options available. Once your hygienist is finished working on your teeth, he/she will often give you some advice on how to improve your brushing and flossing routines.
