WHAT IS CEREC?
CEREC technology makes it possible for patients to get advanced dental procedures done in as little as an hour in the dentist room. Whether it’s an inlay, a crown, an onlay, veneer or any white filling, CEREC by Sirona Dental Systems has completely changed the game.
The process of designing, building and fitting new crowns, veneers, onlays, inlays and fillings used to take two weeks or more. Now with sophisticated CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) systems, dentists can complete these procedures in just one short visit.
HOW DOES THIS CEREC TECHNOLOGY WORK?
Dentists will go about the usual processes in preparing your tooth for a fitting, but instead of using dental putty to get a mould, they’ll take a 3D picture of your teeth with the CEREC camera. This image is then converted into a 3D impression or model, which is used to design your new fitting. The dentist will then review this design and send it through to an on-site milling machine that will essentially carve your new crown from high-quality ceramic material. And depending on the dimensions of tooth this process can take anywhere from 6 to 30 minutes to complete. From there the crown will be cemented onto the prepared tooth in a matter of minutes.
The ceramic “blocks” that are used as a base to fabricate the teeth come in a variety of colors, so you’ll never have the problem of your new tooth being a different shade to the rest.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CEREC?
There are a number of distinct advantages to using CEREC as opposed to traditional lab-made restorations including:
Single visit - Get the entire procedure done in an hour or less, this means you’ll only ever need one local anaesthetic injection and can get your tooth completely repaired in just one session.
More control - Since your dentist doesn’t have to send an impression off to a laboratory where a new tooth will be made, he/she will have much more control over the end result. And you’re far more likely of getting a better, more natural feeling product just working with the dentist who can see exactly how the new piece fits in with the rest of your teeth.
No temporary solutions - With normal lab-made restorations, you need a temporary fitting put in place while you wait for your new tooth fitting to be designed. These temporary restorations have been known to break and fall out. CEREC makes it possible to get the entire process done in one go, so you never have to worry about any of this.
Metal-free & bio-compatible - CEREC CAD/CAM technology uses only the highest quality ceramic materials for anterior and posterior tooth restorations. With metal-free inlays, partial crowns, onlays, veneers and crowns, your teeth will look more natural and be less toxic.
